Excellent Textbook

I never thought I'd rave about a textbook, but I had to comment on this one!

Ahrens manages to present a scientific subject in an interesting and understandable manner. And what really makes this textbook special is the abundance of charts and illustrated explanations, plus photos, trivia, and weather stories interspersed liberally throughout the text. The illustrations and charts make the material easier to understand, and the photos, stories, and trivia helped keep me interested even when the science got tedious.

I appreciate this work for its raw honesty and sense of humility more than anything else. I view it as a really good and insightful tool that I wish more young men and women, 'players' or not would read. I liked the recognition of the spiritual side and praise the self-acknowledgement and accountabilities that the order is able to accept and own. No excuses -explanations but not excuses or blame rendered to anyone. The author seeks to avoid blame but explains the reality that influences (right, wrong or indifferent) will impact the decisions that we make-sometimes good and sometimes bad. Always-the choice remains ours.
The author candidly beckons us to exercise self-reflection-to keep things real and honest as we make use of the tools he has provided. The acts of self-awareness can be implored before, during, and after decisions are made regarding relationships. These are quite useful and can only serve to help us get to our better and best selves-one day at a time. No Rush!

Full of errors, an embarassment to the normally excellent Pen & Sword books.

This is my review on Amazon UK. I am left wishing I had not spent money for this book. I expected a discussion of Byzantine emperors who led their armies in battle. However, this book reads like a general history - one that is filled with factual errors and assumptions based on little or no evidence. The author uses the first 55 or so pages to give "background" information. He insists on calling emperors such as Constantine, his sons, Julian, and Valens "Byzantine" - probably to meet his purported goal of writing about "Fighting Emperors of Byzantium". This is intellectually dishonest. On P. 42 the author tells us that Theodosius may have ordered the massacre at Thessaonica due to his "hot-blooded Spanish origins". No, I am not kidding. On P. 56 the author tells us that Richimer appointed Romulus as a puppet emperor, when Richimer was dead three years before Romulus became emperor. The author then explains - based on no evidence at all in the historical record - that Odoacer "was not totally devoid of human feeling. Taking Romulus aside, he quietly told him to abdicate and sent him off to live on a generous pension with his relatives outside Rome. The boy needed little prompting." I could go on and on with such examples. While most of the Pen & Sword ancient history books are excellent, this one falls well below their standards. I am left wondering how this book was even published.

Good for general information on Byzantine emperors but weak as a military history...

This book is a nice try to present the careers of some 85 "fighting emperors" of Byzantium in such a way that even a layman would read it and enjoy a good true story. Although John Carr has obviously done his homework and he knows Greek so he could study a wide range of Byzantine first hand sources, he failed somehow to produce a real military history as was probably his initial intention. The book delves more into the personalities of the Byzantine emperors and the many dynastic disputes, intrigues and murders and less in campaigns, battles, tactics and military organizations. Only the battle of Manzikert (1071) is covered in more than a single page, while even multiyear campaigns like those of Heraclius against the Persians in the 7th century or of Basil the Bulgar Slayer against the Bulgars in the 11th century are hopelessly compressed into just a few lines. No tactics interpretation is to be found, neither the structural evolution of the Byzantine armies. Although there is some information on the "themata", the author suggests that initially there were 16 of them, while there were only 7 (reaching 33 in total in the 10th century). The author describes the defensive and offensive armament of the Byzantine infantry and cavalry very shortly but he doesn't explain the many changes that these armaments went through during the thousand years of the Byzantine empire! The mercenaries in Byzantine service are only mentioned as "battle axe wielding Vikings or Saxons" with no other detail regarding recruitment, payment, motives etc. Even the all important Greek Fire takes less than a page, while siege warfare is not analysed at all except for the fact that Byzantines used "catapults and mangonels". Mr Carr is heavily influenced by John Julius Norwich's fascinating three volume work on Byzantine history, he quotes him often enough and he even attempts to mimic his style writing a popular history that could be read as a novel, but in doing so he just loses sight of his subject which should be mainly a military history. Overall, this is a nice book for an introduction to the Byzantine history, it's a splendid collection of Byzantine emperors' short biographies which are very well arranged for easy access, but it can't be compared with John F. Haldon's military history of the same era ("The Byzantine Wars") or other scholarly works.

A wonderful compendium...

Everyone in the field of child and developmental psychology has praised this book, which is to child psychology as the Standard Edition is to psychoanalysis. I had a copy of the third edition from my graduate training; this 1999 5th edition advances that earlier work. Every graduate student dealing with children and adolescents should have this reference volume.
I loved the chapters by Carolyn Saarni ("Emotional Development: Action, communication and understanding), whose other works I have read; by Susan Harter ("The development of self-representations"); and by Elliot Turiel ("The development of morality.") They are excellent examples of research, theory, and good writing, all at the same time.
This recommendation may sound silly, but I'll say it anyway: This is the best compendium of theory and research on the social, emotional, and personality development of children and adolescents. If you are a graduate student, this is a necessary volume. You will be asked questions from this on your comprehensive exams.
Good luck!
PS The production qualities from John Wiley are excellent, also. This book will hold up.

Excelent guide

This book is really the ultimate guide for someone with a new puppy! My puppy is 3 months old, and I have been really unsure what to do with him this early on. There are lots of books that talk about training, but this book covers so many of the behavioral issues...which we are having a lot of issues with! The book is well written and easy to follow. If you want a book that really touches on all the problems you can encounter with a new puppy, this is the book for you.

The techniques provided in this book are fantastic. My biggest problem was training my new puppy to follow commands. I was not able to get him to heel. After following the method provided in this book my problem was resolved. He now heel's on command. I have recommended this book to all my friends.

A must for anyone who wants to avoid "puppy in the house" chaos!

A must for anyone with a new puppy--or even just considering a new puppy (like me!). The narrative follows along with the author/trainer as she brings her puppy home, so you learn about what life will be like in those first hundred days, as well as what you should be doing to make your puppy happy, keep her healthy and ensure future behavioral success. I especially liked the encouraging tone. Yes, bringing a dog into your home is a huge responsibility and can be a daunting task, but this book breaks it down into easy tasks and daily steps, and shows that yes, there will be difficulties and your life (and sleep!) may be disrupted for a while, but eventually your pup will grow into a well-behaved, beloved member of the family. The training methods were clearly and simply explained, so even those with no prior puppy experience, or those who have been unsuccessful with training (like myself!), can move forward with confidence. The First 100 Days with Your Puppy is a must when you’re gearing up to get that puppy, or when you’ve endured another sleepless night and need a reminder that “you can do this” along with the tips to make it happen.
