About the Author
Catie was born and raised behind the pine curtain in East Texas. Her favorite memories of childhood are sitting around listening to her family spin yarns. Some of the tales were spooky. Some had grim endings. Some were sidesplittingly funny. The stories all had one thing in common: each had an element of the mysterious or the unexplained. Those weird stories molded Catie into a purveyor of her own brand of lies and legends. One day, she found the courage to start writing down her stories. It changed her life forever. Catie Rhodes lives steps from the Sam Houston National Forest with her long-suffering husband and her armpit terrorist of a little dog. When she’s not writing, Catie likes to cook horribly fattening foods and crochet or knit stuff nobody wants as a gift. She also reads a whole helluva lot.

A great welcome back to Peri Jean's world

I received an advanced reviewer copy of the Black Opal for an easy promise of an honest review.
I had read the first book in the series, Forever Road, a short while ago so I was very excited to visit again. I was no disappointed. Peri's new... adventure isn't quite the right word when dealing with the supernatural the way she does. Let's go with excursion, her excursion into a completely foreign world is exacerbated when she's is asked to use her skills to solver a decades old murder. Her greater confidence and strength in her ghost-whispering powers are challenged in ways she could never have expected.
Catie has such an amazing eye for details and evokes such emotion - you find yourself immediately immersed in Peri's world. She builds threads of emotion with the characters that you never notice slowly becoming chains. You honestly feel connected to the characters, you experience what they experience, ache with them, laugh with them. There is so much detail in the characters that you easily believe they exist. And she does all of this while twisting such a great murder mystery around you.
In Black Opal Catie does a fantastic job of offering you viable suspects (that you enjoy hating or feel such heart ache for) that when the real killer is revealed you're caught unaware. Part of you wants to say "I knew it!" while at the same time you're shaking your head in disbelief that you didn't catch it. It's at the end that you realize the little signs that she left for you. Granted, all the ghostly happenings do a great job of distracting you.
The only complaint I have about the entire book is that I finished it too soon. When I finished Forever Road it was with much the same complaint except that I knew Black Opal was on it's way. The only succor I have about Black Opal being done is that she has a short story coming out in Allegories of the Tarot. But even that will be over too soon.
So if you enjoyed Forever Road (or even if you haven't, Black Opal is capable of standing on it's own), grab Black Opal. You will no be disappointed. Plus then you can help me bug her to get the next one out!!

I finished this book in record time because I couldn’t put it down.

The gritty yet lovable Peri Jean Mace is back in this second installment of Catie Rhodes's Peri Jean Mace Ghost Thrillers series—but this time, her ability’s gone hi-def. In this fast-paced, well-contrived story, our favorite East Texas "sixth senser” is back and thrust into a whole new mystery revolving around her love interest’s family. A curse more than a gift, her power to detect the dead is "in stereo" thanks to a talisman from the past, forcing Peri Jean to put aside the fear and shame associated with her ability and use it to solve a decades-old murder.
In classic Peri Jean style, she does what she can to help, following clues left by the dead, while dealing with her own real-life issues: the failing health of a beloved family member, a new boyfriend, his ex. I love that throughout it all, the author makes certain that Peri Jean stays true to herself no matter where she is or what she’s doing or who she’s around. I know this is terrible, but I kind of hope she never stops smoking.
I became a huge fan of Peri in the first book of this series, and I was relieved to find her unchanged in this book. I do wish that the story had been longer, the mystery less straightforward (this one I actually did figure out before it was revealed), but those were my only druthers. I finished this book in record time because I couldn’t put it down. As I’ve come to expect from Ms. Rhodes, this tale was well-edited, realistic (even in its fiction), and just a fun, entertaining read.
I was offered a free copy for an honest review, but I had already purchased this book because I enjoyed the first one so much.

Hopelessly Hooked

I received an advanced reviewer copy of the Black Opal and promised an honest review.
I hate to say it, but I have one complaint. That being the length. With characterization this well done I'm dying to find myself back in their world, spending time with these living breathing folk, seeing them struggle and stumble and triumph and fight through all life has to offer. Their relationships, actions and reactions, are amazing. Authentic. I think without a doubt Catie's greatest strength is the ability to create not just well rounded characters, but to show them in relation to each other.
Not to say that is her only strength. The mystery laid out in the Black Opal was very well done. I was back and forth several times on who did it and why, but each time I was sure of myself Catie had a new twist. The review was done marvelously, and without giving too much away, had one of the best Peri trademarked open-mouth-insert-foot moments.
I strongly recommend Black Opal, even if you haven't read Forever Road yet. The situation between Peri and Dean is familiar enough in the beginning I think anyone who's ever been in a relationship will relate, and all the specifics of their back story are revealed layer by layer as the plot unfolds.
