Where does the term DYSPRAXIA come from? What does it really mean? This book gives the answers!

An incredibly rich book for professionals with an understanding of SI theory and concepts, that illustrates how Ayres came to coin the term "developmental dyspraxia". The book starts with a contemporary view of dyspraxia by Professor Sharon Cermak from the University of Southern California. (She has published her own book on Developmental Coordination Disorder about 10 years ago.) Then Ayres lays out her clinical reasoning on how to apply knowledge from adult apraxia to children. This book really makes it clear that the Problem in dyspraxia is Ideation and Motor planning - just as in apraxia - and not motor coordination. There is also a chapter on speech apraxia, a Topic not so common for OTs, but maybe this draws the interest of some speech and language therapists to this book.
In my opinion a book that has to be part of any SI specialist's library!

This book gives a neurological perspective from the developer of of SI Theory. This book will bring you back to the roots of theory and reflect on research during this period of time. I would like to see a follow-up book looking at current research. Research has significant increased since the time of her writing.

Unremarkable

I just finished running this campaign, and my group did have some fun with it. However, some of the negatives are fairly noticable. My largest complaint was the railroading nature of the plot, with the campaign heavy-handedly forcing the PCs along a set path. Secondly, the artwork is terrible. Not so much in its quality, as in its inaccuracy. It was rare when the pictures of NPCs matched up to thier written descriptions. Several of the seneraios are unimaginative and bland (This is partcularly true towards the end of the campaign.)
Some of the positive aspect of the campaign consist of its action elements. Fitting perfectly with the feel of d20 CoC, the PCs will be doing more than thier fair share of fighting. So if your looking for a high-action CoC game, this is the campiagn to get. Also, some of the early senarios are rather interesting and fun (The 3rd chapter is my favorite).

it is a pretty good adventure that is very epic in its scale

An interesting blend of Call of Cthulhu with the D20 system. I haven't run the adventure, though there are parts which are more straight forward, where the investigators have to do something to move the plot along. I would tweak passages such as this, though as a whole, it is a pretty good adventure that is very epic in its scale.

Tolerable theme, but needs some massaging

CoC isn't known for its long storylines. Surviving even a single encounter with Lovecraftian denizens is a struggle, particularly for entry level characters. And given your most likely dealing with people walking out of a D20 D&D campaign, prepare to deal with a lot of whining that they don't overcome the encounters without breaking a sweat, much less the fact that they don't get feats and spells like they're used too.

Dealing with a combination of a world-wide infestation of an alien race and an the conspiracy to hide the impending impact of a meteor, the PC's are pulled into an investigation centering around the abduction of psychics. The plot wildly cycles in tone and intensity, and while there is a decent overall flow, it needs to be handled by a good GM, and not just pulled straight off the page.

Overall, a good story that actually makes a CoC campaign worthwhile. Just start the characters at level 3-4 and do some prep for each mission, else you'll be dealing with lots of annoyed players.

Simply the greatest . . .

My first exposure to this book was ten years ago, when in the LSU library I stumbled upon some very old, very dusty books. Being intrigued by old books, I found his simple titles (Adventures in Contentment, Adventures in Friendship, Adventures in Solitude, etc.) irresistible. I read 5 David Grayson (Ray Stannard Baker's pseudonym) books in two days. I returned them to the library, then soon afterward moved to California. I could not remember Grayson's name, though I would tell stories about those wonderful books that influenced my life and my writing.
7 years later, I came across a 90 year old copy of Adventures in Contentment, and found that it struck me as even more profound, having tasted a little of the cynical world that drove the main character from the city to the farm. This is the only book I have ever read that made me cry tears of human experience -- and then the very next chapter had me laughing out loud. (I was sitting at a coffee house with my friends when this happened, after which they wanted to borrow the book.)
If you are a person of thought, this book will move you. Grayson will take you on a tour of his farm and his mind. You will give him a voice, and you will hear that voice speak the words as you read. You will quote this book, you will reread this book, you will think of this book with the fondness of a close friend.
The simplicity of the essays will charm you, his masterful vocabulary will force you to grab your dictionary, and his expressive literary patterns will strike you as being as close to poetry as prose could possible come.
A picture may say 1000 words, but David Grayson's simple essays about small town life in the early 1900's will paint more vivid images in your mind than 1,000,000 Michaelangelos ever could. Simply stated, this is the greatest literary work ever written. Unfortunately, modern literary critics refer to this type of work as unimportant, sentimental and preachy. So this book will probably never be placed in its rightful spot in the literary canon.
Still, don't think the author died in obscurity without his talent being discovered. He was a lifelong friend of Woodrow Wilson, and in his old age, Ray Stannard Baker won the Pulitzer Prize for his biography of his famous friend.

Most delightful book I have ever read.

I wonder why there aren't any reviews on this book? It is the greatest book ever written. This book is about a person who has found a perfect harmony in life. Escaping all the scholastic philosophy and theological quest David Grayson here settles for what I regard the highest wisdom and the true purpose of life, and that is living. The book is potrayal of extra-ordinary experiences of a farmer poet who discovers a world within and without and adds a dream world quality with a sense of humour to our everyday experiences. A return to nature, beauty, simplicity, spontaniety and harmony!

Mildly oxymoronic title for a great work.

Thoughts of contentment and serenity don't conjure up the kinds of images we might associate with harrowing adventure, which makes the title of this book stand out. But as you read you realize the adventure the title describes is of a mental sort, and it begins to make sense.

This is a brief snapshot of a turn of the century farmer's bucolic life. The book doesn't go into too great detail of the farmer's daily routines, but that isn't the point. We see that the way the farmer's mental framework meshes with the quiet rhythms and surroundings of his life leads to a sense of singular purposefulness to his work and the importance of doing his job well. But the book doesn't paint the farm life as being entirely simple. It shows glimpses of a deep well of specialized knowledge and attention to detail required of the farmer to do his job well. The contentment this produces colors his interactions with various people he meets in the book, and paints a picture of the kind of person we all wish were more common.

The writing shows its age, but it has aged gracefully. Verbose and flowering where it needs to be, but it is never difficult to read. The farmer's descriptions of the shapes and colors of his farm and the emotions they evoke in him are vivid and moving, something not easily accomplished by a writer of any age. Underpinning the serenity produced by his love of the land is a sophisticated but elegant religious outlook that is probably uncommon for the age.

Will this book ever rank with the giants of literature? Probably not. Among its philosophical kind it will most likely always be overshadowed by more well known and dense works by the likes of Thoreau. But I can imagine the lead character of the book would be amused by that fact, understanding that the joys of the kind celebrated by this book just aren't what everyone seeks.

Perhaps the greatest praise I can offer is simply that I rarely find an author who I am compelled to read beyond a single volume. Yet upon finding out that Baker wrote a series of books along this theme, I am compelled to seek out and read more of his work.

Daniel M. Rosen is a graduate of the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri, Columbia. Since 1982, he has worked as a photojournalist, technical writer, multimedia developer, and instructional designer. In his spare time, Rosen publishes Rant Your Head Off, (http://rant-your-head-off.com), a blog which covers a number of issues, including various sports doping scandals. He is an avid cyclist.

Breathtaking Overview

Dan has created a must-read for anyone interested in the topic of doping in sport. It's easy to get caught up in the doping scandal of the moment, whether it's Marion Jones, or Roger Clemens, or Floyd Landis. Dan provides much-needed perspective, by giving us more than 100 years of doping history. With this perspective, we can see that no decade in the modern era lacks a doping scandal and no sport is immune from doping.

The book should be mandatory reading for every media talking head. Too often, we take the most recent doping story du jour, and attack the alleged doper as single-handedly corrupting our youth and destroying sport as we know it. Dan points out a bigger truth: doping is out there, every athlete has the opportunity to dope, and we fail to understand the problem if we focus on demonizing whatever athlete is currently connected with doping in the headlines.

In order for Dan to give us this kind of 50,000 foot view, he's had to keep each of his doping stories short and to the point. Often, I found this frustrating -- just as Dan got me hooked on one doping story, he'd move on to another. Many of these stories deserve their own books (and quite a few DO have their own books), but I think Dan's book serves a different purpose. It reminds us that these stories are NOT unique, that doping is now woven into the fabric of sport.

A must for any sports fan

Dope provides a complete and engaging look at the role doping has played in sports over the years. Until very recently, most governing organizations and governments actively encouraged doping amongst its athletes. As pressure mounted, these organizations served platitudes but turned a blind eye to the actions of its athletes and coaches thus tacitly endorsing the practice. Finally in recent years, we are seeing the beginning of a real culture shift. We have come a long way in just a short time.

Mr. Rosen covers all sports from Olympic to US professional sports providing detailed information on the BALCO scandal. There is just enough science to understand the narrative but the author is able to steer clear of sounding like a medical textbook.

Given the backdrop of the current Olympic Games and some of the stories surrounding mysterious changing passports and other suspicious activities this book could not be better timed.

Instead of leaving the reader suspicious of any athletic accomplishment, Mr. Rosen leaves us hopeful that a clean sport is quickly descending on most athletic fields.

a timely and relevant book

"Dope: A History..." is a well-balanced and informative book that brings clarity and perspective to an oft and all too easily misunderstood topic. Given the spate of doping scandals that consistently hit the news these days, it is timely and relevant. Daniel M. Rosen's writing is concise yet easy to follow, offering a wealth of historically grounded facts and interesting anecdotes. This book should be required reading for the professional - athlete, coach or official - as well as the lay person.

About the Author

Dr. Alexander (Sandy) Beveridge is a consultant forensic chemist and lawyer in Vancouver, Canada. He is a fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada and had a 30-year career in the Forensic Science Service of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, where he headed the chemistry section in the Vancouver laboratory for many years. Sandy conducts courses and workshops on forensic investigation of explosions from practical, scientific, and legal perspectives for investigators and at academic institutions.

A must-have for everyone interested in tube audio

If you’re interested in good sound reproduction and DIY projects, know a little about electricity without being an expert on electronics, this is for you.

It contains simple, clear descriptions of the theory of valve amplification and the design of circuits, together with practical step-by-step instructions for building a number of excellent amplifiers. These range from a 3W single-ended amp to a 20W push-pull power amp, including the outstanding Mullard 5-10 design. Many of today's high-end audio amplifiers are based on these circuits. For those who love vinyl there is a section on how discs are recorded and played back, with clear explanations of the sources of distortion.

In the 1960s I was one of a small group of medical students who loved music but could not afford good hi-fi equipment. One of us stumbled upon the original edition of this book. There was a shop in Cape Town where you could buy all the parts; you could make up a kit in a cardboard box very cheaply. I built a 7-Watt stereo amp just by following the instructions in the book. I'm now planning to build myself a stereo system for my study based on the Mullard 3-3 amp.

Great book on Mullard designs

If you are looking for the last word in tube amplifier design, this probably isn't it. It strictly covers Mullard's most popular hifi tubes and their amplifier designs of the 50's. If you are interested in Mullard tubes, most notable being the EF86, EL84, and EL34 then this is the book for you.
It covers classic Mullard circuits like the 5-20 and 5-10 power amplifiers, which defined high fidelity in the 50's and whose designs are still as good as gold today. This book has a special meaning to me because the first amplifier I ever built, as a young teen in the 60's, was a Mullard 5-20. That amp was my first experience with a real hi-fi amp. The book also offers pointers on construction and advice on how to not only build an amp but how to build it so that it isn't a hiss and hum nightmare. The Mullard circuits are conservative and clean. (the 5-20 can produce power levels up to 36 watts but Mullard rated it at 20 watts with very low distortion.)Although the material dates to the 50's, this information is as good today as it was back then, when tubes were the only act in town and the best audio engineers were still working with vacuum tubes. This book covers in detail several of mullard's power amps and preamps with several pictures of actual amps and preamps as well as full schematics and parts lists. The Mullard 5-20 was Mullard's answer to the Williamson (and to me a better answer). Anyone interested in vacuum tube audio should get this book and read it. I can attest to the fact that the circuits do work and work very well.

Classic Never Goes Out of Style

This is an interesting read, of historical value and a pretty good guide to some basic valve amplification circuits. The power amps described are all push/pull so if you're looking for a class-A single-ended design, this isn't your source. Still, it's worth keeping in your library. At sixty dollars it's a bit pricey but at the cover price of $16.95 would be quite reasonable if it were still available. Oh wait. It is still available from Parts Express and it's even discounted so now you don't have to agonize over the expense. I'm still kicking myself over that one.
