Truly Inspiring book!!

This book is not just a "feel good" book with stories to make you smile, it is full of TRUE life stories about how God works in people's lives to bring glory to Him.

There was one story that should pique anyone's interest about life and God's power to heal. In this story, the lady's name is Noelle and she was living out a generational curse of deafness that had started generations earlier. As soon as she turned 20 years old, she started losing her hearing, and this was quite an adjustment for someone who loved music! At the age of 50, God changed all of that. She went to a song service expecting great things, and God came through in a big way -- she could hear again!!

This reminds me of the story in the Bible of the 10 lepers who were healed and the ONE that had to go and tell EVERYONE what God had done for him.

This book will bring you peace and happiness and help you to remember that when God moves in your life, YOU WILL KNOW IT. It will also inspire you to want Him to move in your life and to remember to ask Him to and to expect great results! That is how I felt when I read this book. :)

Real Life Real Miracles - Real Good

I had the privilege of receiving a free copy of Real Life Real Miracles by James L. Garlow & Keith Wall from Bethany House to review. It is a book filled with over thirty short stories about every day people and the amazing miracles that happened to them.

It starts with the story of a passenger on United Flight 811 in 1989. If you remember, it took off from Honolulu and had a large section of the plane rip off. Her story is amazing, but so many other stories in the book touched me in many ways. Some of them have to do with tumors disappearing or people being pronounced dead and then brought back to life. If there is someone in your life who is going through some tough times right now, I know book could bring some peace to them.

Encouraging and faith building

Each true story in this book describes normal occurrences such as illnesses, financial troubles, or traffic accidents. As you read each story, however, amazing things begin to unfold--a man pronounced dead takes another breath, a woman finds the diamond she lost in a motorcycle wreck, the name of God (YHWH) gives hope when all seems lost. The deeper into this book you delve, the stronger your faith and belief will become that good old-fashioned miracles are still being performed today, and the only One who deserves the glory is our great and awesome Creator.

Why I liked it...

I always enjoy hearing stories about how miracles have strengthened a person's faith in God. I love how the outcome of certain circumstances cause you to look nowhere but up. There are just some things that can only be explained by believing that God's hand was there. Real Life, Real Miracles reminded me of just how involved God is in the lives of the children He loves.

What I didn't like...

Some of the retellings were a little lengthy and dry. I feel the stories would've been more powerful if they had been told from a first person perspective.

Recommendation...

I would recommend this book to others who enjoy reading about the power of God and the difference it has made in the lives of others. If you need a reminder of just how amazing God is, if you need a little extra dose of faith, or if you're just looking for an easy, relaxing read, this book is for you.

good read

“The Replacement” is a book that I really enjoyed. It brings to the surface two parallel stories: Anna’s and Mickey’s. Anna is a grown woman, who lives with her son but who is so narcissistic and buried in her own career and personal needs, she seldom cares about what her son is doing. Her mother, Marianne, is the one who takes care of the boy most of the time, so when the woman goes missing, Anna’s got more than one problem on her hands.
On the other hand, Mickey is about the sweetest kid you can imagine. Sadly, his father left him when his mother got sick and the woman became an alcoholic, abusing Mickey both mentally and physically. I really like how the author describes Mickey’s feelings; it gives us a different perspective on how an abused child thinks and feels. Because of an ugly episode that I won’t spoil for you, Mickey ends up doing something bad.
To me, it was pretty obvious from chapter 5 how Anna and Mickey’s stories are connected, but I still enjoyed reading the book because of its characters that show you just how complex the human mind really is.

It’s not the best book I’ve read

It’s not the best book I’ve read, but considering that this is an indie author and this is her first shot at a thriller, I actually enjoyed it. The plot is similar to what you’d find in a commercial thriller movie, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I found the story to be shorter than I wanted, I’d like the author to jam even more action into a novel of this genre. The story line is credible considering the multitude of psychopaths that are out there.
What I particularly liked is how the author describes Mickey’s childhood. The first chapters that bring forward Mickey’s life are quite emotional, maybe too emotional for a thriller. It’s amazing to see how a child can stay positive in such a difficult situation. It’s quite inspiring even to adults such as myself. I feel like the action at the ending could be longer, it all seems to be happening so fast. I also wish the author would have made a more in-depth analysis on the true reasons behind the killer’s behavior. However, if you’re an experienced reader of thrillers, it all makes sense.

Interesting novel worth reading

I am not an avid reader of thrillers, but I did enjoy this book. It is not especially innovative in its plot, but it will keep you reading.
The characters of Anna and Mickey are well fleshed out, despite that the book is relatively short for this type of story. There are some plot twists, but I won't spoil that. I was able to see where the ending is going, but maybe that is just me. I don't know if this book will be satisfying to the more experienced readers of this types of stories, but I mostly liked it.

This is an excellent resource for people who converse in public places about Biblical issues. The last two chapters are the best. The others seem to me more wordy than is necessary to make a helpful point. So read the last two chapters first!

Misleading Title

This book contains thoughtful, well-stated, fully expressed apologetics. However, its catchy title and trendy cover is misleading; it implies that the book is a reader-friendly guide to answering tough universal questions about God. In this regard, Copan's book really misses the mark. It is written more for the academic rather than your average Christian caffeine addict, like myself. So, if you could use some help giving tangible, biblical responses to questions like "If God is good, then why is there so much suffering?" then I recommend Randy Newman's book Questioning Evangelism. After you read it, bring a seeking friend to the nearest Starbucks, and start a "God" conversation over a cup o' Joe.

An Awesome Read

Book 1 starts out a little slow as it builds several characters. However, once the main character throws the stone, watch out! You won't be able to put the book down. Be sure to have book 2 and book 3 on hand because you will want to immediately start reading the next book. Once one friend read it and passed the series on, the rest of the friends purchased the series, couldn't put the books down, and then passed the books to more friends. Trudi Canavan is superb in this series. I would love to see this trilogy as a movie.

In the book Why Is There Anything?, Matthew Rave argues that the question is not meaningless. Instead, physics and philosophy—together with aesthetics, ethics, psychology, mathematics, literature, and computer science —can help unravel this tangled question. Rave looks at the fundamental question from as many angles as possible, and talks about ways the question has traditionally been addressed. An application of quantum mechanics (and the many-worlds interpretation) then brings us closer to an “ultimate” answer.
Maybe there is no ultimate answer to the question “why is there anything?” That doesn’t mean, though, that one can’t have fun thinking about it. In Rave’s unique, playful style—a sort of Socratic dialogue meets My Dinner With Andre—no topic is left out. Rave has made a comprehensive survey of the fundamental question, using as many tools as possible. Challenging yet accessible, broad in scope and eclectic in its approach, this book uses humor and metaphor to create a very personal narrative, one that employs dialogue and wordplay such as in Hofstadter’s Gödel, Escher, Bach. In a word, the book is fun.
By the end of the book, Rave hopes to convince the reader of two things: one, that the fundamental question is complex, vast, rich, and not easily dismissed; and two, that modern physics—in all its baroque glory—can help illuminate and clarify the fundamental question in ways that are surprising and satisfying.

Reading this book didn't make sense, but it made wonderful sense to read it!

Those who read this review will have no means of knowing (until now!) that I stared at the empty frame into which my review was to be written for a good ten minutes without knowing how to start and what to say. (You could argue, probably correctly, that the last sentence proved my point: that I could not think of what to say!)

Matthew Rave's book was recommended to me by John Zande, author of the book The Owner of All Infernal Names, that, in turn, came out of a blog discussion between me and John following the broadcast in September 2015 of a BBC Horizon programme on multiple universes. Rave, who believes that multiple universes are a much "simpler" concept than just our single one, employed a very clever format to convey his message as to Why Is There Anything? That format being a discussion between Achilles and Brutus.

Having said that and having, without doubt, been incredibly grateful for reading Rave's book, nonetheless the book defies any clear meaning for this 70-year-old Brit. But maybe that's the message that Rave offers. That there are some aspects of time, energy and matter that cannot be fully understood even by those of Rave's impressive credentials. That there are questions that can only be projected out into the deep silence and will only be answered in another time; or even space-time!

If you have ever looked up into the night sky and wondered about the meaning of it all, then read this book. You won't find that meaning but you will be transported to corners of your mind you never believed existed. No better illustrated than by the following extract from Rave's last chapter: Your tears move millions.

"Somewhere in the multiverse, you are loved. Somewhere you are hated. Somewhere, you are loved by everyone. Somewhere, you are hated by everyone. God exists, and He does not; the same is true for Allah, and Buddha, and Zeus, Odin, Cthulhu, and the Green Lantern. Somewhere, you are Wonder Woman's arch villain. Somewhere else, there are no villains, because perfect goodness has found its expression as a mathematical absolute. You cry, and you do not cry; your tears move millions or are forgotten forever."

A Journey of Ideas and a Unique Approach

Before I write this review I want to disclose that the author Dr. Rave is a very good friend. We met at Wake Forest University as undergrads playing many a game of chess, Rolling Thunder and Psychic Guess Who and have stayed in close contact ever since.
My first impression of the book as I started reading was a physicist "Dinner with Andre". There are sections that I liked or intrigued me more than others but I found it quite interesting, a lot of fun, and worth the journey.
Why is there anything?
The WITA question is one of the greatest mysteries in the universe. I have read numerous books on this topic.
The book to me however is much more than an attempt to answer this question. If you are looking for a pure discussion on the, "Why is there anything" topic as presented by for example Lawrence Krause in "A Universe From Nothing" or a review of the many "Why is there anything?" theories which was in Jim Holt's, "Why Does the World Exist" you will find a very different approach in the book and a much broader topic area. My interpretation is the book is partly a structured attempt at how to determine what something means. The interpretation and defining of language/communication/information/beliefs,religious solutions vs. the scientific method, science even goes at it with philosophy and of course theories of quantum physics + much more.
"It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end" LeGuin.
The journey itself is the most important aspect of the book. The reasoning that goes into the choices and conclusions the characters make that encourage the reader to think about the process on how the decisions were made and if they want to agree or disagree with the protagonist is the key.
The approach of the book is quite different than anything I have read for this type of topic. Having a dialog between 2 characters is unique and the addition of interesting and amusing books, movies, people (not often Britney Spears is referenced in Physics/Philosophy books) etc in indirect ways makes it more interesting.
The author is a brilliant individual and I believe this will be the first of many more books to come on various topics. If you are into topics dealing with physics and philosophy I believe you will find reading this book unique and time well spent.

"Think on this: the ultimate question," asks physicist, Matthew Rave. "Why is there anything?" If you have ever sought an answer to this question then this book is, simply put, a tremendously good read.

Rave is in possession of that all-too rare ability to articulate the tangled, convoluted, intuitively not-obvious world of Quantum Mechanics, and with wit and narrative flare communicate the nature of reality as seen from the leading edge of modern physics. The narrative unfolds as a dialogue had between the protagonists, Achilles and Brutus, who’re the embodiment of two opposing worldviews: the supernatural (theistic) world of Woo, and the scientifically derived naturalism of science, and Rave presents both with an honesty and, I'd say, a gentleness that is to be admired. Why is There Anything? is an easily understood, sometimes laugh out loud journey through some of the most astute and vexing arguments for the existence of anything, let alone everything, and through this entertaining and theatrical report rises the Many Worlds Theory which is, Rave argues convincingly, our best model for answering the ultimate question.

Perhaps most importantly, Rave identifies and confronts an omission commonly made by cosmologists today who in answering the question, why the universe "is" as opposed to "isn't," presents the case that ‘something’ can indeed come from ‘nothing;’ pointing to particles randomly popping in and out of reality as evidence thereof. While true, such events do happen, they happen all the time, it is an unsatisfactory (and ultimately lazy) answer as it fails to address the fact that for particles to perform this trick the laws of Quantum Mechanics have to already be in-place; meaning ‘something’ really didn't come ‘nothing.’ Those laws are something, so the question has not really been answered. Rave (who I've learnt devised a retrocausal experiment to control God and prove the incompatibility of Free Will and omniscience at the age of twelve) is, thankfully, not lazy. He identifies the problem, and he answers it in a manner that is as pleasurable to read as it is logically appealing.

The interventions of crisis management during the 2007 to 2011 financial crisis were not simply responses to a set of given developments in markets, banking or neo-liberal capitalism. Nor can those interventions be adequately explained as the actions of sovereign state officials and institutions. Instead, Langley argues, processes of crisis governance are shown to have established six principal technical problems to be acted upon: liquidity, toxicity, solvency, risk, regulation, and debt and that the governance of these technical problems, is shown to have been strategically assembled in order to secure the continuation of a particular, financialized way of life that depends upon global financial circulations.

Contributing to interdisciplinary debates in cultural economy and the social studies of finance, and grounded in extensive empirical research, this book offers an innovative analysis of how the contemporary global financial crisis was governed. Through an exploration of the interventions made by central banks, treasuries, and regulatory authorities in the Anglo-American heartland of the crisis between 2007 and 2011, experimental and strategic apparatuses of crisis governance are shown to have emerged. These discrete apparatuses established the six technical problems to be acted upon, but also shared certain proclivities and preferences. Crisis governance assembled discourses and devices of economy in relation with sovereign monetary, fiscal, and regulatory techniques, and elicited an affective atmosphere of confidence. It also sought to secure the financialized way of life which turns on the opportunities ostensibly afforded by uncertain financial circulations, and gave rise to post-crisis technical fixes designed to advance the resilience of banking and the macro-prudential regulation of financial stability. Thus, the consensus that prevails across economics, political economy, and beyond - wherein sovereign state institutions are cast as coming to the rescue of the markets, banking, or neo-liberal capitalism - conceals a great deal more than it reveals about the governance of the global financial crisis.

Easier to understand than the usual books on this subject.

I wanted a book that was easier to understand since a lot of the books on Quantum Mechanics assume that you area graduate with the pre-reqs required for the level these guys are at. This is that book. Happy reading if you are interested in the subject!

Great self teaching text

As the title states, this book would be an excellent college textbook for physics undergraduates. It is also ideal as a supplement for students taking quantum mechanics and as a preparatory text for students about to take quantum mechanics and as a refresher for those who have taken it in the past. Not recommended for the layman who may be interested in only general concepts. Plenty of equations and diagrams that show up nicely on my 7" Kindle Fire and plenty of example questions to work to help with conceptual understanding.
