Ken Follett at his best...

If you like reading fiction, then you will love Ken Follett. His narrative style is unique and always results in a book that captivating and engaging. His stories never seem to contain any 'filler'; that is, narrative content that is not relevant to the main theme of the book. For me, at least, the result is always a book with which I stay totally engaged from beginning until end.

A Dangerous Fortune is, like most of his work, a historical fiction saga that follows a related cast of characters through an interesting historical period (the late 1800's). The focus is an upper class English family, the Pilasters, owners of a London based commercial banking enterprise. Augusta is the shrewd and conniving matriarch who manipulates and controls the men in the family. Her nemesis is her nephew Hugh who is the black sheep in the family ostensibly because of his fathers business failure and suicide but mainly because he is, by far, the sharpest knife in the Pilaster drawer and constantly threatens to usurp Augusta's incompetent son Edward.

There are many other players in this drama which plays out over a generation, all of whom provide relevant contributions to the drama and political intrigue of the novel. You kind of have a sense early on about how everything is going to turn out but just as things seem to be coming to a satisfying and conclusive head, something unforeseen occurs and you are off and running in a different direction.

If you are a Ken Follett fan (like me) who has not read this book, then you will thoroughly enjoy it for all the same reasons you liked his other works. If you have not read Follett before, this as good a place to start as any.

Dynasty set in Victorian England...

So... I re-read this book after not reading it for about 5 or 6 years... I'm actually gonna have to remove one of the stars down from 4 to 3. The book starts of well enough a nice "hook" although the hook was... well a bit lacking ... but it served its purpose in cementing the main characters in to their given roles for their whole lives ... thus making them a bit one dimensional... I kind of felt like I was reading "Dynasty set in Victorian England" right down to Joan Collins version of Alexis Carrington in the part of Augusta Pilaster ... I will not bother to list the rest of the caste that match up almost perfectly... BIG DRMATIC EYE ROLL... the other issue I had was the recycling of characters that borrowed heavily from A Dangerous Fortune to his first book of his Century Trilogy... again I will not ruin the parallels but some of them are pretty blatant... The story is pretty predictable and the ending seems... rushed (like he wanted to get to his next book...all in all its an ok read if you have nothing else to read...

I'd give 'A Dangerous Fortune' six stars if I could

This is a fabulous novel for anyone interested in Victorian or neo Victorian literature. It follows the rise and decline of a wealthy English family of bankers and their friends and acquaintances during the last decades of the 19th century, beginning in the 1860s. All the characters, as well as Victorian London itself, came to life vividly, the plot is impeccable and the writing is impressive. Ken Follett reminds me of Dickens in the way he depicts characters and evokes drama, but the pace is much faster and therefore more suited to a contemporary audience. I couldn't turn the pages quickly enough. Anyone who loves reading family sagas, historical novels, dramatic stories, and good literature will love it. I’d give it six stars if I could.

Elevating fan fiction

I went from reading a more fan based analysis of fan fiction to this book which is a scholarly analysis of fan fiction. Both have their good points. I enjoyed this book for taking fan fiction seriously and giving the contribution of fan fiction writers the respect they deserve. Great book for anyone interested in this 'fad' called fan fiction.

The renowned rock artist Draco Rosa discovered the wonders of a plantbased diet after being diagnosed with cancer. He worked hand-in-hand with his nutritionist, Nena Niessen, who is also a cancer survivor, to find strength through a healthy diet during the process of treatment and recovery.

His life would never be the same: he learned to identify the beneficial ingredients in foods in order to make his own recipes, bringing out the best in every plant and leaving out harmful ingredients. As such, his first-hand experience helped him realize the impact that nutrition can have in the prevention and recovery from illness, as well as on one's general well being.

Este libro llenó mis expectativas sobre la importancia de una alimentación sana a base de plantas. Draco y Nena comparten sus propias experiencias sobre sus luchas contra el cancer y cómo pudieron vencerlo gracias a una dieta a base de plantas, y ésto hace que el libro tenga un sentido de propósito auténtico. Los felicito por el gran trabajo que hicieron y por compartir con sus lectores consejos que ayudan a vivir una vida más saludable y plena. Me gustaría conseguir el libro en inglés para regalarlo a varias de mis amistades que leen sólo en inglés. Recomiendo este libro a todas las personas que se preguntan cómo prevenir y curar las enfermedades sin tener que recurrir a medicina convencional. La madre naturaleza tiene la respuesta a nuestros problemas de salud.

Este libro resume y simplifica los cambios alimenticios que podrian facilitar en gran medida cualquier tipo de curacion, no solo de cancer. En mi caso , lo compre como una guia para conservar la salud. Utiliza libros de referencia de renombre para basar su dieta y recoge dicho conocimiento de forma muy basica y facil de comprender. Provee la informacion de lo que se debe hacer y luego da un recetario para utilizar basado en sus recomendaciones con recetas variadas y sencillas. Bellamente ilustrado . Un libro que no debe faltar en nuestras casas.

Muy buen libro. Son ingredients que no mucha gente usa pero es bueno saber que hay tantos ingredients que ayudan al cuerpo humano pero que nosotros a veces por vagos o por comer lo mismo todos los dias no buscamos alimentos mas alla para mejorar nuestor estilo de vida. Yo estoy empezando a hacer mas cambios en mi dieta gracias a este libro. Me encanta pq de principio a fin es clean eating.
