Since receiving his Ph.D. from The University of Notre Dame, Ralph Bravaco has been a member of the faculty of Stonehill College, where he has taught more than a dozen computer science courses ranging from introductory programming to compiler design. Shai Simonson earned his B.A. in mathematics at Columbia University and M.S. and Ph.D in computer science at Northwestern University.

Good read, but contains stupid mistakes

I'll start by saying that the book is a very good introduction into OOP. The writer has a very good writing style that slowly introduces readers into common computer jargon, rather than saturating them in it from the very beginning. Though this style may be criticized by some, I believe it is what makes this book a very strong read. Also, the author does a very good job of including an array of exercises at the end of each chapter, ranging from error correction problems, to actual projects. The only big problem that I had with the book was the random typos that can be found throughout. The author seemed to either be in a hurry, or just didn't care when typing out some of the program examples. Chapter 11, in particular, was riddled with inconsistent variable names, and syntax errors. What I mean to say is that the author would label a variable as one name, but half-way down the page he would reference the variable using a different name. This might be seen as miniscule, but it can become very confusing for a beginner.

An Excellent Introduction

I used this book in an Introduction to Computer Science course. I have already done a lot of programming, though not in Java, so the material conceptually was not new to me. I enjoyed the book and I found it to be engaging and humorous.
My wife also took the course, and she had never programmed before. She really enjoyed the book, and she has learned a ton from it. She found the explanations to be help and not boring. She is a bit concerned that our next computer science class will not be as enjoyable because there will be a different textbook.

Getting NEW Knowledge from an old database

Data mining came about when people in IT departments began to realize that in their corporate databases there was a lot of knowledge that was sitting there, basically unused. An easy example:

You run two ads for a mail order item. Ad "A" pulls five orders. Ad "B" pulls 1 order. You put these results into an Ad-Result database, analysis subsequently shows that Ad "A" is obviously better, right? But suppose on further analysis you find that the sole customer from Ad "B" ordered ten more items. But this information is off in the Orders Placed database, not in the ad results database. Integrating "Knowledge" from both databases gives you much better information. This is
Data Mining, or a subset (some people say a superset) thereof called Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD).

There are applications for such procedures in nearly all forms of doing business: Order a book from Amazon and on your next visit they will suggest some other titles you might like. Do a search on Google and they will remember your search and perhaps suggest some other things you might like to see. In the health care or life insurance field you would like to know about the effects of smoking, overweight, exercise, family history and more on longevity.

This book is a description of how to do practical applications by using statistics, set and Bayes theories, neural networks, and Fuzzy information retrieval where you don't quite know what to search for in the database. Some background in these areas would be helpful, but I found that using what I knew got me started and other things came along in time. A well done book.

I would definitely buy again from the seller.

Notes about the book: The book is good, though it assumes you have some background knowledge of some statistics, and algorithms which they use.Some times you have to go in, and manipulate the data sets to understand what they are trying to say, but you still get the general idea. Any further input on the book would be beyond the scope of this review.

Beckett is on the forfront of spiritual mapping.

Beckett's book, "Commitment to Conqour," pictures ministry not just in the local church but in the whole community. He challenges the reader through personal example how to positively attack spiritual strongholds. The church he serves and founded, The Dwelling Place, demonstrates the best of evangelical desire and congregational focus. Together, they confront the principalities and powers and see the victory of the Holy Spirit over demonic activity.
Beckett illustrates well how to unify pastors and churches to take one's city for God. We are not in a battle by ourselves but in a battle for Jesus Christ, a battle ultimately to be won by God Himself. By uniting 30 pastors together, they come together in agreement with God and claim the land.
Clearly, this is a must read for anyone who wants to take their city for God. Beckett's excellent teaching skills shine in this book.

Robert Vargas argues that the state, through the way it governs, can contribute to distrust and division among community members, thereby undermining social cohesion. The strategic actions taken by police officers, politicians, nonprofit organizations, and gangs to collaborate or compete for power and resources can vary block by block, triggering violence on some blocks while successfully preventing it on others.

A rich blend of urban politics, sociology, and criminology, Wounded City offers a cautionary tale for elected officials, state agencies, and community based organizations involved with poor neighborhoods.

It was in the last days of December, 1882, that the first volume of Henri Frédéric Amiel's "Journal Intime" was published at Geneva. The book, of which the general literary world knew nothing prior to its appearance, contained a long and remarkable Introduction from the pen of M. Edmond Scherer, the well-known French critic, who had been for many years one of Amiel's most valued friends, and it was prefaced also by a little Avertissement, in which the "Editors"--that is to say, the Genevese friends to whom the care and publication of the Journal had been in the first instance entrusted--described in a few reserved and sober words the genesis and objects of the publication. Some thousands of sheets of Journal, covering a period of more than thirty years, had come into the hands of Amiel's literary heirs. "They were written," said the Avertissement, "with several ends in view. Amiel recorded in them his various occupations, and the incidents of each day. He preserved in them his psychological observations, and the impressions produced on him by books. But his Journal was, above all, the confidant of his most private and intimate thoughts; a means whereby the thinker became conscious of his own inner life; a safe shelter wherein his questionings of fate and the future, the voice of grief, of self-examination and confession, the soul's cry for inward peace, might make themselves freely heard.

About the Author
Henri Frederic Amiel (27 September 1821 – 11 May 1881) was a Swiss philosopher, poet and critic. Born in Geneva in 1821, he was descended from a Huguenot family driven to Switzerland by the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. After losing his parents at an early age, Amiel travelled widely, became intimate with the intellectual leaders of Europe, and made a special study of German philosophy in Berlin. In 1849 he was appointed professor of aesthetics at the academy of Geneva, and in 1854 became professor of moral philosophy. These appointments, conferred by the democratic party, deprived him of the support of the aristocratic party, which comprised nearly all the culture of the city. This isolation inspired the one book by which Amiel is still known, the Journal Intime ("Private Journal"), which, published after his death, obtained a European reputation. It was translated into English by Mary A. Ward at the instigation of Mark Pattison. Although modest in volume of output, Amiel's mind was of no inferior quality, and his Journal gained a sympathy that the author had failed to obtain in his life. In addition to the Journal, he produced several volumes of poetry and wrote studies on Erasmus, Madame de Stael and other writers. He died in Geneva.

This book is for the discriminating reader that appreciates virtue. I could never do it justice in these brief words. I love this work and I am very grateful that it came to be. It almost didn't since it was published after Amiel's death, by his friends to whom Amiel left his work. A very personal and beautiful journal, full of wonderful insights into Life, the nature of things, the human condition, etc. I love Amiel. What an honest man.

great book. If you read rimbaud, baudelaire, etc.

They were contemporaries. The copy I read was a first edition printed in 1897; it's a tiny book that almost looks like an old bible. The pages are goldlined, with a leather cover, and it's small enough (3.5 inches x 4 inches) to slide in your back pocket. The typeface is so small (font size 6? font size 4?) i could barely read it. I won't spoil it for you but it's certainly worth reading, and although as a diary, it was never meant for publication, nietzsche  for example, read amiel. There are, incidentally, two books. Amiel's Journal Intime volume I and volume II.
