My Favorite Dare

I stayed up the entire night reading this book, so please forgive the sleep-deprived incoherence!
First let me stress that I'm not someone who automatically declares everything that Tessa Dare writes a five-star gem. In fact, until devouring Any Duchess Will Do, she's been an "I really like her, BUT..." author for me. I've found her pacing uneven, her plots a bit too drawn out and filled with frustrating contrivances, and her couples sometimes appearing to be more "in lust" than genuinely in love. My expectations for this one were also tempered by the fact that I don't generally love cross-class Regency romances, especially when it involves an impoverished heroine being Pygmalion-ed by a wealthy, aristocratic hero.
So imagine my delighted surprise to discover that this book is, in my fond but often critical opinion, Dare's very best yet. The plotting feels tighter, the pacing struck me as much smoother, and I fully bought Griffin and Pauline as sharing an emotional connection that's even more powerful than their physical one. This book seemed to magically address my "yeah, it's enjoyable, BUT..." complaints about Dare's previous work while still retaining everything I've always adored about it. We get her witty, warm and breezily engaging writing style, lively characterizations, and fabulously sharp dialogue. My Kindle's "highlight" button was worn out to the point of exhaustion!
I genuinely loved the hero and the heroine, both as individual characters and as a couple. And, trust me, that's not a given for me :) Pauline is just the sort of feisty underdog heroine who Dare writes best: slightly socially awkward and endearingly imperfect, yet spirited, smart and independent. Griffin, meanwhile, is a serious contender for my unofficial list of top 10 heroes ever. This is subjective, of course, but he happens to be exactly the sort of hero I find most enjoyable and compelling: a semi-reformed rake who's witty, clever and with a splash of amusing arrogance, yet with a not-so-surprising sweet vulnerability, generosity, and a very wounded but tender soul. Of Dare's heroes, he most resembles the justifiably popular Colin of "A Week to be Wicked", only with a touch more seriousness and depth.
But here's what really elevates this book for me: In a sea of self-serious, overly angst-drenched historical romances, Dare's stand out as such joyful, humorous and energetic FUN. That's not to say this novel is devoid of substance---in fact, it has a surprising amount of subtle depth and insight and delivers its share of pathos. It's just that Dare is among the few authors whose view of the genre seems to coincide with mine: that romances should contain plenty of sweet, swoon-worthy fun, humor and happiness rather than relentless grimness. I just love the general tone and energy: neither too dry and stilted nor too melodramatic. I also love the way Dare depicts most of her female characters as supportive, motivating forces in one another's lives rather than as petty rivals.
I'm a voracious reader, but this is among the only books of the past several years which I found so enchanting and unputdownable that I had to forego my usual seven hours of sleep. I've reluctantly given most of the Spindle Cove novels 3.5 stars, feeling that they tend to start out strong before meandering around in the middle and limping to the finish line. For me, Any Duchess Will Do started out wonderfully and retained that wonderfulness throughout. Happy reading, and good luck getting more sleep than I did!

Remarkably, stupendously wonderful

Sometimes, when I'm reading a new book, I just know that I'll have to write a review the minute I finish. Usually, that happens when a book is either remarkably good, or stupendously bad. As I was reading Any Duchess Will Do, I realized that I would write a review as soon as I had read the last page, because this book is remarkably, stupendously wonderful -- perhaps the best of the Spindle Cove series.
In truth, I had this feeling up until I hit the 75% mark on my Kindle, after which I became annoyed. I had been thinking to myself, "there is absolutely nothing to criticize here," but then all of a sudden there was. And the thing is I can't really explain it without completely spoiling the plot. So I won't; I'll just say that I found Griff's rationale for never marrying unconvincing. Nevertheless, this book overall is 5+++ stars, so even if I deducted points for annoying plot turns it wouldn't matter.
The outline of the story is best explained in the blurb, but that doesn't communicate what wonderful, multi-faceted, fully-realized characters Dare has created - Griffin, the Duke of Halford, his mother the Duchess, and Pauline Simms, a serving girl at the Bull and Blossom in Spindle Cove. Griff is a rake, but not really, while Pauline is an ignorant barmaid, but not really. And while I generally find cross-class Regency novels to be unconvincing, Dare comes up with some clever and credible reasons to explain why Pauline is actually a diamond in the rough.
The love/hate, but not really, relationship between Griff and his mother is funny and touching. She is longing so for grandchildren, but her efforts to marry off Griff have been unavailing:
I've tried to find the most accomplished young beauties in England to tempt you. And I did, but you ignored them. I finally realized the answer is not quality. It's quantity."
"Quantity? Are you taking me to some free-love utopian commune where men are permitted as many wives as they please?"
"Don't be ridiculous."
"I was being hopeful."
Her lip curled in a delicate scowl. "You're terrible."
Later, when the duchess feigns illness in order to throw Griff and Pauline together alone, Griff sees through her:
On his way out of the bedchamber he addressed the vigilant butler. "Higgs," he said, "see that my mother does not move from that bed. And summon the doctor. Not the gentle-mannered one, either. The one with the leeches."
Indeed, the duchess is so desperate for grandchildren that she vows to make Pauline the toast of the ton in one week. (Nod to Pygmalion) Griff comes to admire Pauline and fiercely defends her against anyone who disrespects her. (Nod to Pretty Woman) And although Pauline attends a grand ball at Carlton House, waltzes with Griff, and loses a shoe after fleeing the ballroom (nod to Cinderella), Griff does not become a handsome prince who sweeps her off to his castle. This book is not that simple.
The plot is clever; surprising events occur, and while I knew there would be an HEA I wasn't certain how it would occur until the last page. The pacing is excellent; there was never a moment I wanted to put the book down and do something else. The trademark Tessa Dare humor is present on almost every page, but then there are also beautiful, serious passages, such as when Griff tells Pauline she's beautiful:
"I have seen myself. That's the snag, you see."
He shook his head. "No, no. Not in a mirror. I know how mirrors work. They're all in league with the cosmetics trade. They tell a woman lies. Drawing her gaze from one imagined flaw to another, until all she sees is a constellation of imperfections. If you could get outside yourself, borrow my eyes for just an instant . . . There's only beauty."
If you've enjoyed Spindle Cove thus far, you'll love this installment. It isn't necessary to have read the previous books, but I think it's more enjoyable that way. And if you have read the earlier ones, you'll appreciate this exchange between Colin and Minerva (now Lord and Lady Payne) when they fear that Pauline has been abducted by the wicked duke (Colin's former pal in debauchery):
[Colin]"And if our little fact-finding investigations turn up nothing, we'll perform an experiment. We'll call at Halford House tomorrow."
She nodded. Her eyes misted with tears.
"Darling Min." He stroked her cheek. "Are you truly that concerned?"
"No," she said. "Oh, Colin. I'm just so proud." She squeezed his hand. "You're using the scientific method."

This Cinderella Tale deserves 6 stars. Curse you, Jeff Bezos! (kidding)
By Dangerous when Cooking
This ties with Minerva and Colin's story (A Week to be WIcked, I think) for my favorite in the Spindle Cove Series. I'm a sucker for a delightful, slightly skewed Cinderella/My Fair Lady/Pygmalion fable and Dare delivers that in spades. No pat plot resolutions, or last-minute deus ex machina, or clunky revelations to elevate the heroine to be the hero's 'proper' match. Nope, what makes them right for each other is sizzling chemistry and unforced, genuine compatibility, revealed in various funny and emotional situations.
The plot in a nutshell: Desperate dowager whisks her son Griffen, the duke, off to Spindle Cove, a place full of spinsters and unmarried ladies, to force him to pick ANYONE, vowing she will make a duchess of his choice. Out of perversity, he selects the bar maid, a commoner with working class pronunciation and fluency in profanity, and gives Mom one week to turn her into the toast of the Town. If the duchess fails, she must never plot to marry him off again. (He further hedges his bets by offering the bar maid a huge pay-off if she promises to be a social disaster.)
This story's Cinderella, Pauline, has all the requisites to be a great, lovable heroine. She foresees financial independence for herself and her sister as her HEA and agrees to the duke's bargain. Her fairy godmother, the gut-splitting, hilariously devious duchess and mother to confirmed ducal bachelor, Griffen, is desperate enough for grandchildren that she plots subterfuge even as she compulsively produces unfortunate knitwear for tots. She declares, "I need grandchildren before my decline. It's not right for two generations of the family to be drooling at the same time." Loved her.
Not just a simpleton Prince Charming, Griffen has foresworn marriage for reasons he bears emotional scars from but dares not acknowledge to anyone else. (He is droll, self-deprecating, innately decent and utterly charming. Loved him, too.) In choosing a hopelessly inappropriate (and impudent) servant, Griffen hopes to cure his mother of her plots to marry him off with one, last ridiculous gamble. But of course, nothing turns out as intended. It's great fun watching his intentions unspool. And to watch Pauline dare to wish for more from life without ever dreaming of being a duchess.
First, I cannot think of another author whose work today delights me as often and to such a degree as Tessa Dare's does. She constructs fresh stories that don't tread the same ground over and over and over. No recycled tropes here. Each of her stories reveals two unique, fully-realized people somehow figuring out they are meant to be together. She writes banter, sexual tension, sexual fulfillment and gloriously graceful passages with equal effortlessness. With disarming and dead-on wit, her characters speak their own minds, with droll humor and still sound absolutely like themselves and no one else. It's a flat-out pleasure to read something that feels so inevitable, unforced and right.
I'll say this again, too, Ms. Dare's writing has depth and grace. Even the smallest detail comes alive with fresh, concise description: "He peered out the window and saw nothing but vast expanses of rolling green, dappled with cloud-shaped shadows." In so few words, the sweep of a broad, hilly English landscape comes vividly to life in my mind's eye.
This author is rightfully admired for her sly, whimsical and laugh-out-loud humor; but I think her humor would ring hollow or become tiresome if not balanced so adroitly by her ability to depict emotions with honest, moving insight.
This story is a trifecta: a great fun story; populated by wonderful, interesting characters at loggerheads; and graceful writing. What a pleasure it was to read!
