About the Author

James Ellroy was born in Los Angeles in 1948. His L.A. quartet -- The Black Dahlia, The Big Nowhere, L.A. Confidential and White Jazz -- were international bestsellers. American Tabloid was Time's Novel of the Year in 1995; his memoir My Dark Places was Time's Best Book and a New York Times Notable book for 1996. His novel The Cold Six Thousand was a New York Times Notable Book and Los Angeles Times Best Book for 2001. He lives on the coast of California.

Ellroy's First Kicks Ass

Getting into Ellroy? Why not start at the beginning? Watch his style develop. I think folks get disappointed when they read this and other earlier works after they read "the hits" like "L.A. Confidential" and "American Tabloid." But hey, had he come out of the gates with "American Tabloid" he'd probably be done by now. Fortunately for us, Ellroy started off slow. "Brown's Requiem" is a much more straightforward hard-boiled novel. But just like his later work, it rocks, it rolls, it leaves you on the side of the road hitchiking back to town. As I read this book, I couldn't help thinking of it as an updated "The Big Sleep." It has that sad, broken, 3 am undertone to it. If you dig that tough, L.A. stuff, you'll dig this. Note: The story does involve caddies and golf (which I know nothing about) but it doesn't matter. The golf element is merely a backdrop. The book is also about murder, arson and Mexican porn and, regardless of what my friends will tell you, I know nothing about these subjects either and still enjoyed the Hell out this book. Put it this way: You won't be reading any excerpts from "Brown's Requiem" in "Chicken Soup for the Golfer's Soul."

solid crime novel but not his best

This was Ellroy's first published novel. It's a good, solid crime novel. It's mostly in the tradition of his predecessors like Chandler and Hammett, but some of his future trademarks are there, like the seedy anti-hero who eventually discovers and follows his own moral imperative. It's a bit bumpy in spots, and sometimes the plot falls into place a bit too neatly, but it's a good read. It's not nearly as amazing as the L.A. Quartet or American Tabloid, all brilliant books for which he has become justifiably famous. I read this after reading those (as well as My Dark Places and Crime Wave). Had I read this first, I would have been shocked by his later work. Maybe The Black Dahlia is a better place to start for the Ellroy novice.. This one seems almost quaint in comparison.

Great P.I. Fiction

I am not a James Ellroy fan. In fact, "Brown's Requiem" is the only novel of his that I have read, because it is the only one of his books I've found that is a straight private detective story. And as an example of the that genre, this books stands among the best. Ellroy's hero, Fritz Brown, is everything a good P.I. should be; world weary, cynical, alcoholic and carrying heavy baggage from his past. He also has plenty of good character eccentricities, like a fascination for classical music. He is also prone to make that classic P.I. mistake, to fall in love with a woman he knows he probably shouldn't fall in love with.
All of this said the book takes some unexpected twists and turns. Brown ends up investigating his own client, his romantic interest turns out to have a VERY complicated past and his case turns out to be far more elaboarate than it first appears. All of this leads to a violent and satisfying climax, like any good P.I. novel should. Fans of P.I. masters such Andrew Vachss, George Pellecanos and yes, Raymond Chandler, out to be right at home with Fritz Brown.

Great Info - Not Just for Women

A friend of mine (a woman) suggested that I take a look this book. I was skeptical at first because of the title, but I found that many of the strategies detailed in the book were just as applicable for men as for women. I was especially interested in the chapters on developing key leadership skills, building effective networks and communication. The many quotes and insights/experiences from CEOs and other senior executives were helpful to put the topics of the book into perspective - great for comparing notes. I plan to share the book with both my male and female colleagues.

Thirty-four percent of them would not escape. The culmination of years of research and survivor interviews, Hell's Gate is a riveting hour by hour and day by day account of this desperate struggle analyzed on a tactical level through maps and military transcripts, as well as on a personal level, through the words of the enlisted men and officers who risked the roaring waters of the Gniloy Tickich to avoid certain death at the hands of their Soviet foe.

Eastern Anomaly

Nash has written, I believe to be, one of the greatest works on the East Front. Stories of courage, imagination, and leader innovation are traits that mark the history of the East Front and are clearly present in this book. What makes this book an anomaly as my heading states? It is the fact that Douglas Nash clearly projects how personal the war was - not only at a tactical level, but also at the operational.
The Battle of Cherkassy (Korson) Pocket signified the destruction of the last German offensive capability in the East.
More importantly, it symbolizes two great operational struggles: The Russian will to destroy their invaders by attempting to create another Stalingrad catastrophe and the German resolve to survive and escape annihilation.
The Book describes the battle in three major levels: strategic, operation, and tactical. Each level includes the planning, coordination, and execution of their respective missions. The decisive characteristic of this work is the smooth intregration of all three of the levels and their respective components. Coupled with the operational and strategic awareness, Nash presents a myriad of personal accounts and stories at the tactical level that are uncommon for a book that covers an event of such size and magnitude. As a result, one will easily "feel" the desperation on the opposing forces. The result of Nash's diligent work: one will become immersed in the story rather than bored or confused from the complexity of the battlefield.
Finally, I want to address to the physical attributes of the book. The old saying, "Don't judge a book by its cover" should NOT apply here. The size, material, mere construction, and the cover pic leave an incredible, positive impression which is absolutely fullfilled by its content.
I became fascinated with the Battle of the Cherkassy (Korson) Pocket after reading about it in Paul Carrel's SCORTCHED EARTH; however, Carrel left me yearning for more detail about the battle - Douglas Nash successfully filled the void.

Good historical analysis

Hell's Gate is a very good, in depth analysis of one of the Eastern front's most important battles. The buyer should be aware however that this book, in my opinion, is meant for military historians, not for the casual reader. As indicated in previous reviews, the book would benefit from better maps and detailed illustrations supporting the troop movements and positions well described in the book. My other criticism is that the author approaches the subject very analytically, and while he has incorporated first person material he has missed an opportunity to make the subject matter much more exciting and a better read. All in all it is a very good, detailed account of military history and if you are a serious student of WWII & the Eastern Front you would benefit by purchasing this product.

By far one of the best written books about this epic battle on the Eastern Front [Cherkassy] during W.W.II. This book is a must read. You'll never forget the agony, despair, and also the will to survive by any means, of those soldiers involved in this brutal battle.

Tragic, touching, and heartwarming

I began reading the story of Finley when I registered with Stillbirthday to become a Birth and Bereavement Doula. I honestly had no idea what to expect.
I laughed and cried, and cried, and cried.
I lost my first child at just about 12 weeks gestation and it was like I had been hit by a bus. I can't begin to imagine what Mel and Baz have gone through and I am so very sorry for you your loss.
I have had two children since my angel baby. I have become a Childbirth Educator and Lactation Counselor; working with teens and adults.
I am so thankful for Mel's courage to write her story because it provided me with another perspective. It also helped to read what Mel wanted to hear or wished she would have heard, done, or experienced. This will help me to serve those suffering a loss. I'm not sure I would have counseled the same had I not read this book.

Best Book I've Read About Stillbirth

AFTER FINLEY is not only inspiring, but gives much needed information every parent who suffers through the loss of their baby must know. It is an empowering book to the parent. Every grief counselor and maternity ward nurses, doctors MUST read in order to be better prepared to help their patients who experience stillbirth or miscarriage. Thank you Mel for sharing this heart felt book. It has helped me 37 years after my baby loss. Blowing kisses to Finley!

After Finley is an amazing book. Mel Scott writes an incredibly moving and personal memoir of her journey of loss and unending love for her son, Finley. But Mel also demonstrates an uncanny ability to occasionally step outside the realm of personal reflection and analyze the events and experiences she faced. the result is a gift to all of us as well as a challenge to professionals to make sure our service to bereaved parents in the moments & days following the stillbirth or death of the baby they invested so much love & hope into is respectful and supportive. A Rare Look at a Political Cult

This superbly written book provides a look at a phenomenon not widely recognized; namely, that a cult can be created around a political ideology just as easily as around a religious belief system. In the case of the little-known organization to which Ms. Stein belonged, known simply as the "O", most group members did not even know who the leader was, as he communicated solely by written instructions to his followers. This demonstrates that cult dynamics can come into play even where the leader is not a charismatic figure in the usual sense of the word. Ms. Stein's gruelling ordeal, which began as an idealistic effort based on Marxist principles and ended in exhaustion and the discovery of a shocking crime, makes for a memorable read. Inside Out is a very useful addition to cult memoir literature from a talented writer.

Gripping and thoroughly frightening

A haunting, splendidly written account of one person's plunge into a world of manipulation and brainwashing. Although the organization that Ms. Stein found herself entangled with is beyond the fringe of extreme, it leads one to realize how many so-called mainstream organizations employ some of the same tactics to subjugate their members. Her story illustrates what can happen to a person who desperately wants to belong -- at virtually any cost.

A riveting read

This is a terrific book! Once started, you'll not be able to put down this heart-rending account of ten years lost to a left-wing political cult. This beautifully written story could have happened to anyone who had a political conscience and grew up in the '60's. Although it is painful to read in parts, it is ultimately redemptive as the author finally finds her true self and her own voice.

You'll need a good background of who Carrol was (for example from the books by Morton N. Solden, who herself has ADD and is the author of Women with Attention Deficit Disorder, believes that many adults, whether diagnosed or not, are suffering needlessly from ADD symptoms, which include difficulty focusing on certain tasks, meeting deadlines, and interacting with people. Solden describes the frustration of several people who seemingly "fail" in job after job because of the symptoms of ADD and describes her own "absentmindedness" and disorganization. Yet she lectures and counsels others about ADD. Her three-step approach begins with a focus on the brain, then on the self and finally, on the self in the world. For each part of this journey, Solden offers specific steps designed to help ADD sufferers. For example, Solden says that people need to spend time observing how their brain works at different times and in different circumstances. She describes the "Tightrope Effect" of balancing the variables to keep life running smoothly. Furthermore, Solden believes in relying on the help of others for cooking, paperwork, or other tasks without feeling helpless. Perhaps most useful are the dialogues that are included to help readers handle situations that have been problematic in the past. Surprisingly, Solden provides only a cursory discussion of medication. Since her strategies are likely to be utilized by people already on medication, a more complete discussion of other treatment options would have been helpful. Still, this book should prove beneficial to ADD sufferers and their families.

Solden (Women with Attention Deficit Disorder) follows her earlier work on women with ADD with this expanded focus on the estimated eight to ten million adult Americans who have ADD. Although the condition is most commonly associated with children, Solden reveals that years after diagnosis many adults still feel discouraged because their treatment focused exclusively on managing or overcoming the symptoms of ADD rather than on teaching them how to lead a fulfilling life. Her professional skill in helping others cope with ADD shines through in this well-organized, frankly stated work. The material is organized into three stages: understanding the brain and primary symptoms of ADD, discovering one's true identity and accepting one's uniqueness, and learning to share one's self with others. Examples of real-life journeys of two patients with ADD, and numerous self-help exercises at the end of each chapter, add value to this superior work, which is targeted to lay readers but will also be of use to mental health professionals. The excellent appendix includes practical tools for organizing one's life and a useful guide for professionals working with patients with ADD; the additional resources cover books, URLs, and organizations that focus on ADD. This important work stands out among the growing number of books on ADD for its focus on adults and the author's emphasis on learning how to come to terms with and live comfortably with the disease. Highly recommended for all public libraries.

I Only Wish I'd Bought It Sooner

I haven't finished reading it, but already I can't say enough about how much this book has helped me. If you are an adult struggling with ADD/ADHD this book is a must have, because it's one of the few that deals with the post-diagnosis dilemma. And adult who's diagnosed with ADD experiences many things at once; relief because there is now a name for what have likely been life-long problems, anxiety because a diagnosis naturally brings with it a change in self-image and a potential identity crisis, frustration because there is "treatment" but no "cure for ADD, etc., etc. While any number of books do a wonderful job of explaining what ADD is, or offering strategies to cope with the symptoms of ADD, few if any deal effectively with the inner-life and struggle of the adult who is learning to cope with the symptoms of ADD while simultaneously trying to craft a new identity post-diagnosis, and put the past and the present into context. Basically, few other books give advice on how to effectively get on with life after diagnosis.
At first Solden's words may be hard to take. She matter-of-factly states that there is no "cure" for ADD, that it probably can't' be "fixed" and that the symptoms will probably continue to cause problems for the adult with ADD. To her credit, she puts this as gently as possible, and offers the promise that what she has to say will help the reader stop trying to "fix" himself or herself, and gain a balanced perspective of self that will help him or her to move forward and live his or her best life while continuing to live with and struggle with ADD.
Solden's central, and perhaps most powerful, message is simple: diagnosis is not identity. People with ADD, unfortunately, live in a world that reminds them of their difficulties and shortcomings on almost a daily basis. Solden sees how this distorts the self-concept of the adult with ADD and offers tools and methods to begin shifting that self concept from focusing on difficulties to a more balanced focus that looks realistically at individual difficulties and strengths.
I could say more, but I'll sum my opinion of this book by saying that were it in my power to do so, I would give a copy of this book to every single adult with ADD. In fact, it would be handed out with the diagnosis and first prescription.

solden does it again

Sari Solden wrote what I think is the best add book for adult women with her first book, especially those newly diagnosed and this book is just as good. Here, she is addressing primarily those of us (men and women) who have lived for a couple of years or more with a diagnosis of addult add (most likely not diagnosed as a child). She clearly explains, using examples, the how different people deal with the diagnosis over the years, what the stumbling blocks are in terms of career choice and home life, and how to overcome them. She speaks about how many of us may accept we have add, and dutifully take our meds, but still have problems because we don't think about the life changes we may need to make to best utilize our unique skills and the help we may need to be succesful. She talks about how to identify problem areas and think up solutions. Excellent book for the add adult--though not the best "intro" book.

Hits the Mark! A Must-Have for the AD/HD Bookshelf.

Ms. Solden has opened the door to new territories in this book. Unlike other books on AD/HD that seem to repeat much of the same information over and over again, Journeys into ADDulthood gently leads the reader into the next stage of one's ADD self-discovery and growth. It is a refreshing look at "what happens next"- after one is diagnosed and treated.

The author breaks up the book into three main sections, or journeys: The Crisis of Understanding, The Crisis of Identity, and the Crisis of Success. She gently walks the reader through each stage, offering insights and gems of wisdom. Each chapter ends with an "Exploration"- a short self-help exercise to help you think more about how you can use the material in a personal way for self-growth.

Both practical, sensitive and emotionally packed with wisdom from this pioneer in the field of AD/HD, I highly recommend this not only to those touched by AD/HD, but to those who work with them.
