Genuine page turner.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Was a genuine page turner. The author skillfully wraps a story around the historical facts and gives life to the real characters while adding some main characters that are fascinating. We get to follow their journey , which is full of drama and incidents. And the surprises I never saw coming. You might as well buy books 2 and 3 at the same time as they are just as good.

Better Together

Good Adventure which continues the story of Benedict and Theodosia. Interesting history surrounding Henry.
The ending was a little unbelievable as Theodosia becomes Superwomen.
One note: Benedict and Theodosia are better together. In this volume, unlike The Fifth Knight they spend most of their time apart.

This is the second book in the series and is a nice follow-up to the initial FIfth Knight book. Again that period is described nicely and characters are reasonably developed. The plot is interesting and fooled me on a couple of occasions. If you liked the first book you will like this one.

This 5th revised and expanded edition provides a part-by-part review of all models of the Springfield .45-70 Trapdoor rifle, carbine and cadet rifle. Three new chapters have been added to this edition: Officer's Model Rifles, Experimental (26-inch) Carbine, and Fencing Muskets.

Every part from buttplate to front sight of every model is discussed in terms of dimensions, use, markings, finish and changes to that part by serial number range. A new serial number list is included with serial number ranges listed by production years. This new list includes serial numbers not previously included by other authors.

This book makes it possible for the collector to determine whether or not a particular rifle, carbine or cadet rifle is original as manufactured. The collector must keep in mind that not only was the .45-70 Springfield Trapdoor used by the Army, but also by the Navy, Marines, National Guard and various state militias from 1873 to well into the 20th Century. The trapdoor was still being issued as late as World War I to militia units for guard duty.

During this more than forty-year period of service, the trapdoor went through several model changes and even more frequent parts upgrades. So a rifle manufactured in 1879 may have undergone as many as twenty parts changes by 1889, all of which are considered valid, original manufacturing changes. The problem the collector, museum director, gunsmith, author and shooter faces is determining which changes were made officially by the Ordnance Department while in service and which were made by surplus dealers, resellers and previous non-military owners.

"The .45-70 Springfield" provides answers to all these questions and more. With this book in hand, it is possible to assess every part and using the serial number stamped on the receiver, determine first in what year the arm was manufactured, then on a part-by-part basis, decide whether or not each part is the correct and original part for that arm. If some parts are found to have been manufactured later, then the book will tell you whether or not those parts were installed by military armorers according to regulation.

Why is this important? First, the .45-70 Springfield is a tangible piece of the history of our nation. And as such, it deserves to be correct. Secondly, the .45-70 Springfield's value depends in large part on how original it is. Parts that are incorrect can be replaced, returning the arm to both its historical and economic value. The book also provides a historical overview of the .45-70's development and use during the latter part of the 19th Century and into the 20th. Also included are assembly/disassembly instructions, cleaning and maintenance, glossary and bibliography.

Joe Poyer is the author of more than 400 magazine articles on firearms, the modern military, military history and personal security. No detail too small...thank goodness

Ever find a nice looking old rifle in a shop or at a gun show but were worried about one or two non-standard features? Is it genuine, or is it a fake? Should you buy it and risk paying good money for a "parts gun," or leave it and risk losing a valuable addition to your collection?

This little volume can help you decide. It has detailed descriptions of all the standard-configuration .45-70 "trapdoor" Springfields--all the parts, all the markings. But it also documents non-standard configurations that are nonetheless genuine and the history that explains why they were made that way. Why do so many 1884 rifles have 1873 breech blocks? Is it possible that that 1888 rifle came equipped with a two-piece trigger guard rather than the standard one piece? This is the sort of minutia that makes our friends and family roll their eyes but that enthralls collectors of antique firearms, and it is just the sort of detail the authors provide.

Small and light enough to take with you, this book should be standard "hunting equipment" for collectors on the prowl.

Complete and Thorough

Using line drawings, charts and well-researched texts, Joe Poyer and Craig Riesch bring us a comprehensive, part-by-part reference book dedicated to an important U.S. military firearm. I have a couple of .45 Springfields and I found both of them covered in detail in this book.

This isn't light reading, but if you've got a .45 Springfield you're trying to identify, or restore, this book is worth its weight in gold.
It's thoroughly-researched, well written and a must-have if you're shooting, collecting, restoring or trying to identify one of these historic rifles.

North Cape Publications is famous for its FOR COLLECTORS ONLY series and this book follows that format faithfully and successfully. I gave it five stars and keep right next to M.D. Waite's and B.D. Ernst's TRAPDOOR SPRINGFIELD.

A good book on the 1873 "Trapdoor" Springfield.

I needed a general reference book for Trapdoors and this book fit the bill. It's fairly inexpensive. Some of the much more expensive books cover the Trapdoors in great detail and at huge expensive, some up to $150 for an out-of-print book.

I am looking to purchase a Trapdoor. This book explains the markings, manufacture of the weapons, history of the various parts of the weapon, inspectors of the weapons, gives production numbers, give explanations of why part "A" would be found on rifle "b". and is an extremely helpful to anybody who wants to buy a trapdoor. What's nice is the book is easy to carry to a gun show and you don't have to pull out a smart phone and flail around on the web trying to find out information. Just for the speed it's worth half of the price of the book.

I dinged a star because there was not a heck of a lot on the history of the weapon, no better than Wikipedia. It seemed to be a little thin on the deployment history. Still, the .45-70 gave good service to the US Army and States Militias for a time and did what was required of it.

This is a fair book and will give the reader exactly what they need for good knowledge of the Trapdoor.

Gets the Job Done

In reviewing this book, I'm reminded about the famous quote that democracy is the worst form of government except for every other one.

The task of taking a large, complex topic such as critical theory and presenting it in primer fashion makes it inevitable that there will be places where the more knowledgeable or experienced reader feels like the person undertaking that task is being reductive. And it would be easy enough to pick on the book's idiosyncrasies: the psychoanaltyic chapter is too narrowly Freudian, the deconstruction chapter has trouble explaining how the practice (explained fine) developed from the theory, the reader-response chapter neglects later responses to some initial criticisms of the theory.

But these are the sorts of complaints that will be levied by those who aren't the target audience, and to make them is to wish for a book that is both an introduction for undergraduates and a more thorough encyclopedia for scholars. The book isn't trying to be the latter.

As an introductory work, Texts and Contexts is actually pretty good. The prose is clear and avoids overloading students with too much jargon or too many technical terms too quickly. It is also one of the few primers I've run across that tries to address practice rather than just theory--that tries to show what a _______ critic does rather than just what _______ criticism is.

Another plus is that the bibliographies at the end of each chapter, while short, are very serviceable, and provide students with a list of key readings in each area of criticism that can help them get started at being more thorough in the area in which they are most interested in.

If there is one thing I seriously hate about the book it is that it is one of those "designed to be text"books that comes out in a new edition every other year. I've had every edition since the second, and the changes are pretty superficial. (As I right this, it's now in the fifth edition.) Unless absolutely required (say by a professor) to buy the latest edition, readers would be better served to get a used, older edition on Amazon--they are usually less than a quarter of the price of the new edition.

A number of years back, Mortimer Adler, he of the Paedeia Program and the wonderful Great Books Series, probably the last publically successful canonical venture before we starting deconstructing the canon, wrote a bestseller which was at the time regarded as a classic: "How To Read a Book". Lynn has written the book that Adler was trying to write.

After years spent reading and teaching the humanities, I've learned that we don't spend a whole lot of time thinking about how we read. That conclusion, in simple, funky Americanese, is, in as many words, what, I think, Jacques Derrida was trying to say in a lot more. And if words are, in a sense, metaphors, it's that much more imperative that we get a handle on our method of reading, that we become mindful of our processes of comprehension. Teaching mindful comprehension, a method of reading that sticks, is the main task of college level pedagogy in the humanities.

Lynn's book is a masterpiece of organization and concision. He begins by briefly describing the seven + basic approaches to reading which, in contemporary academic parlance, go under the rubric of critical theory, and then proceeds to devote a chapter to each, examining, in simple, clear, and accessible terms and demonstrations, what value the particular approach under discussion has for understanding the text.

Lynn's writing is lucid, accessible, exemplary. His citations are edifying, central. His examples are, well . . . textbook. The book as a whole is remarkably comprehensive in a svelte, easy-to-hand, state-of-the-art format. I challenge Freshman English or Language Arts instructors to find better than what we have here.

I use this book to introduce literary theory to my AP high school seniors. The explanations of the theories are accessible, the sample essays provide great models, and the suggested strategies for critical writing effectively allow my students to engage with both work and theory. Impressive... AND the author maintains a sense of humor which adds to the readability. Wow!

Wonderful Ending To Two Exciting Love Stories

I had been waiting for this book for a while. I can say it was definitely worth the wait. I enjoyed it immensely and found it a fitting ending for Dmitry/Royal and Anatoly/Renee (I would have said Gabriel/Bridget too but her reaction to an accidental run-in made me somewhat side-eye the character in the end). Loved the angst, the action and the layers. Good times. I totally recommend.

Have I mentioned that I would love to see this series as a movie, likely on Lifetime? Cause I really would.

Anyhoo, I'd read that the author will continue to write Medlov stories but for the next generation, so I am going to assume that means Anya and Alexandria, at the very least, will be getting stories. I'm hoping Gabriel might get a story too. =)

Dimitry is the Man

This book did not disappoint. I just loved it. I was so glad to see Dimitry back. He is the best. Loved seeing all three Medlov`s working together. I missed Dimitry so much. He is my favorite. He is the toughest Russian who ever lived. He and Royal never let you down. The love story is just as strong as ever. I was worth the wait. I love Anatoly and Renee. Gabriel became a real Medlov. Dimitry was at his best and having his boys beside him was even better. I loved the babies. Lil Anya is the smartest little girl. She is all Dimitry. I am selfish. I don`t want this to ever end. I never want Dimitry old. There is a lot more I could say. but I don`t want to give away any spoilers for those who have not read it. Getting to the end was so sad for me. I read as slowly as I could. Thank you so much for this awesome read.

Confusing time line and too many erros...the story was ok

I finish reading this book about a month ago. It was ok but it put me a weird place. This book was about The Medlov family after the birth of their twins and Anya getting kidnapped by someone who was extremely close to the family....sort of. So, the book before this was about Anatoly, if I wasn't mistaken wasn't Anya like 3 in that book? Now in this book she is 5 but the twins were just born? I don't know that time line is really off but anyways....There are some close members of the family that get killed and Anya is abducted...ok. Seems pretty good so far. You find out who takes Anya and why....fine. Then that's where the story is kind of lost....nothing ever gets resolved. I would have liked for some sort of resolution to have happened between Dmitry and his sister. Royal....I really didn't care about and at this point in the book she is like in her late 20's early 30's why does it seem as if she is being described almost as a middle age woman? I really haven't cared for her character since the first book. Anya was cute but ok. Like I said nothing really got resolved. Anatoly and Renee did have some sort of chemistry and Gab and Briggy were ok. Like I said I was kind of lost on this book. The books did get better after the first but just I don't know. When authors decided to bring up an important subject in a story and it looks as if they will explore it and they don't....they ruin the book. I.E. Dmitry and his sister.

About the Author
George M. Marakas is an associate professor of Information Systems at the School of Business at the University of Kansas. His teaching expertise includes Systems Analysis and Design, Technology-Assisted Decision Making, Electronic Commerce, Management of IS Resources, Behavioral IS Research Methods, and Data Visualization and Decision Support. In addition, George is an active researcher in the area of Systems Analysis Methods, Data Mining and Visualization, Creativity Enhancement, Conceptual Data Modeling, and Computer Self-Efficacy. George received his PhD in Information Systems from Florida International University in Miami and his MBA from Colorado State University. Throughout his academic career, George has distinguished himself both through his research and in the classroom. Very informative, but rarely used
By Minyatur
I purchase this book for my MIS class, but end up using it probably two or three times for the entire semester. Now i am stuck with the book that no one wants to buy. The materials are pretty good with a good explanations. Just double check with your professor about the 12th edition, because they are very similar.

About the Author
C. Henry Edwards is emeritus professor of mathematics at the University of Georgia. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Tennessee in 1960, and recently retired after 40 years of classroom teaching (including calculus or differential equations almost every term) at the universities of Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Georgia, with a brief interlude at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton) as an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow. He has received numerous teaching awards, including the University of Georgia's honoratus medal in 1983 (for sustained excellence in honors teaching), its Josiah Meigs award in 1991 (the institution's highest award for teaching), and the 1997 statewide Georgia Regents award for research university faculty teaching excellence. His scholarly career has ranged from research and dissertation direction in topology to the history of mathematics to computing and technology in the teaching and applications of mathematics. In addition to being author or co-author of calculus, advanced calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations textbooks, he is well-known to calculus instructors as author of The Historical Development of the Calculus (Springer-Verlag, 1979). During the 1990s he served as a principal investigator on three NSF-supported projects: (1) A school mathematics project including Maple for beginning algebra students, (2) A Calculus-with-Mathematica program, and (3) A MATLAB-based computer lab project for numerical analysis and differential equations students.

David E. Penney, University of Georgia, completed his Ph.D. at Tulane University in 1965 (under the direction of Prof. L. Bruce Treybig) while teaching at the University of New Orleans. Earlier he had worked in experimental biophysics at Tulane University and the Veteran's Administration Hospital in New Orleans under the direction of Robert Dixon McAfee, where Dr. McAfee's research team's primary focus was on the active transport of sodium ions by biological membranes. Penney's primary contribution here was the development of a mathematical model (using simultaneous ordinary differential equations) for the metabolic phenomena regulating such transport, with potential future applications in kidney physiology, management of hypertension, and treatment of congestive heart failure. He also designed and constructed servomechanisms for the accurate monitoring of ion transport, a phenomenon involving the measurement of potentials in microvolts at impedances of millions of megohms. Penney began teaching calculus at Tulane in 1957 and taught that course almost every term with enthusiasm and distinction until his retirement at the end of the last millennium. During his tenure at the University of Georgia he received numerous University-wide teaching awards as well as directing several doctoral dissertations and seven undergraduate research projects. He is the author of research papers in number theory and topology and is the author or co-author of textbooks on calculus, computer programming, differential equations, linear algebra, and liberal arts mathematics.

Feel like it is a Good supplement but not a good choice of you are trying to learn it by yourself. It has some odd and some even answers in the back unlike the normal strictly odd answers.
