Recommended for fans of Abercrombie, Ryan and Miles Cameron

Tony Healey is known for his popular sci-fi series Far From Home, and has now quite successfully branched out into the epic fantasy genre with this short but exciting and well written opening chapter of The Fallen Crown series. The Bloody North begins with an Outlaw Josey Wales vibe, this time with swords instead of pistols. It is a tale of revenge and the protagonist reminds you of The Bloody Nine from Joe Abercrombie's First Law series. He is forced to leave the peaceful life he has built after a career as a spectacularly successful mercenary, and has to return to his previously violent ways. It's a very fast paced story with a surprising ending, and the reveals of what's coming next has got me quite anxious for the sequel.

Healey does characterizations and descriptions well, and keeps you on the edge of your seat as the action comes fast and furiously. The dialogue is crisp and often humourous in spite of the deadly events that unfold.

I'm sure this is going to be a very well known epic fantasy series so you might as well get started now. This is one of those books you can't put down.

There's a worn-out looking Russell Crowe impersonator who looks like he's been through hell and back

Right out of the gate you know exactly what sort of book this is going to be. There's a worn-out looking Russell Crowe impersonator who looks like he's been through hell and back, there's the obligatory dark hood and sword combo and we've got 'blood' right there in the title.

I rolled my eyes through the first few chapters of butchery and chaos, thinking I knew exactly where this was heading and accepting it with a pinch of salt as the gore kept coming.

Then the book surprised me, because about a third of the way through we transition from the grimmest of the grimdark into something that vaguely resembles traditional fantasy.

We have a wise mentor, a love interest, a humorous animal companion. You know something? It actually improves the work too!

This is not a story of mindless slaughter and vengeance as the opening would dictate. Instead we have a bold but brief tale of personal redemption as a character transitions from being a bloody-minded killer of modern contemporary fantasy into something and someone much more palatable.

Upon completion of the book, author Tony Healey explains his influences and you can clearly see their effect on the story. The man is a fan of traditional fantasy in the purest sense and has only recently got his claws into the more modern 'grey' fantasy of dark brooding killers surrounded in treachery and decrepitude.

Healey's prose is solid, and he is no stranger to writing, with a number of science fiction books under his belt. Despite this The Bloody North is his debut in the fantasy genre and at times it shows.

The companion characters were hinted at but not fleshed out, the story itself, though well crafted, was too brief for my liking. There was room for expansion here, and this felt like a novella that had been padded out rather than an epic. I can only hope the next in the series is considerably larger and we get to learn more about the players within.

Healey name-drops Joe Abercrombie as having influenced him, and there is a lot of the Bloody Nine in protagonist Rowan Black. I'd recommend it to fans of the genre, but with the caveat that it's not going to quite measure up to the standards set by that which influenced it.

The Bloody North is a solid 4/5 and could well be the beginning of something larger to come, I look forward to the second book with keen interest.

Very readable, but not much depth and detail

I was browsing Kindle Unlimited, and the computerized Amazon Recommendations insisted that I give this one a try. So I obliged, partially because the description says "For fans of gritty, action-packed fantasy in the vein of George R. R. Martin and Joe Abercrombie". The George R. R. Martin part, that turned out to be only half true. Yes, it is in a fantasy-medieval world, yes there is some magic, yes it's not a rosy-Tolkien-esque story, but the similarities end there. There is not a lot of depth with the characters (don't really feel like we as readers got to know them as real people), not a complex story, not much in world building, the internal dialogue is rather unrealistic. On the other hand, the lack of depth and detail in the world and characters may be a plus for readers who like to fill-in-the-blanks on their own in stories that don't provide it..

Having said that, this is a very readable book. I finished it in a weekend. Even though it's only 240 pages, finishing a book quickly is a measurable metric in favor of a book - since I didn't have to read it or finish it. There is action, and fighting, and some mystery, moving at a fairly good pace. It is easy to read, the author avoids using unnecessarily obscure words just for the sake of author showmanship (not an uncommon trait with some fantasy writers, I'm looking at you Mr. Stephen R. Donaldson). Calling it pulpy would be a bit unfair to the book, but at the same time, it's nowhere near the level and complexity of GRRM type of work. Geekery plus for the author, the first draft was written on a Chromebook as revealed in the "Notes & Acknolwedgments" at the back of the book.

While it is post-Tolkien in subject matter (lots of gray characters in messed up situations), in other ways, it's still Tolkiensque (Kip, and powerful Wizard). Another ugh moment, there's one short chapter that is essentially bad erotica, a badly written sex scene [to be clear, I am not objecting to sex in books, but to a badly written sex scene].

Timing: this review is written about three months after book #1 was released, so I have no way of knowing how the rest of the series will turn out.

Doesn't cover everything, of course.

As another reviewer mentioned, this isn't a tourist guide. There aren't that many maps, and the ones present do not show stops. Aside from the creation of new suburbs such as Jackson Heights, there isn't a whole lot of discussion of how the subways affected neighborhoods after they were built, especially after cars began to take over.
The main point this book makes is how the combination of enforced low fares and the perception of rapid transit as a business rather than a public service caused the subways' decline. The beginning of the book describes some of the engineering problems involved in building subways in New York. I would have liked to have seen more of that, especially for later, non-IRT subways; diagrams of the terrain in question would have been interesting.
Anyway, the book has to stop somewhere. For all that's left out, the discussion of people and politics, and of how things could have turned out differently, is fascinating.

Wonderful History of NYC's Public Transportation System

Having lived in NYC most of my life, I wanted to find a book which provided a comprehensive overview of the development of our public transit network, from the omnibus of the Civil War era to the present period. This book does it, and without running to encyclopedic length (its about 260 pages, not counting about 50 pages of supportive notes/footnotes).

A good deal of attention is given to the political machinations which were of such importance in building our current complex route system, including unfortunate gaffs, payoffs and a frequent lack of vision. (Editorial note: What we have is wonderful; what we might have had would be a marvel (like the rest of America, NYC has a history of periodic distain for public transit infrastructure development, preferring instead to nurture a love affair with the automobile - think Robert Moses).

The book also emphasizes the impact of subway extensions from lower Manhattan into the upper reaches of the borough (Washington Heights, Inwood etc), as well as Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx. At least for a NYer, this is fascinating stuff, and the author uses examples, such as Jackson Heights in Queens, to illustrate the "before and after" impact of bringing multiple lines into what were farmlands and open fields just 100 years ago. The author provides lots of interesting and supportive statistics. There is also an excellent index along with over 50 pages of source footnotes.

The only real failing of the book is a lack of decent maps and a curious avoidance of using current line designations (ie, E train, #7 line etc) to quickly identify line routes as they were built in spurts starting in about 1900), preferring instead to use the old general designations (like IRT, BMT, IND), which no one under 60 remembers.

There are some photos, but they are few and of inferior quality. (See online sites like Museum of the City of NY, NY Historical Society, NYPL, NYC Transit Museum etc for great photo collections). There are also many books in print with photos of various facets of NYC transit history.

Bottom line though, I highly recommend this work. If it had decent maps, I'd give it 5 stars.

Great reference book for both new and power users

I have been working with SharePoint since version 2003, and I have been using this book since its SharePoint 2010 edition. The book started out with basic SharePoint fundamentals and then dove into details of each feature, what they were for and how to use them. The language was easy to understand and the instructions were very clear. It is one reference book I like to use for step by step instructions as well as getting a better understanding of unfamiliar SharePoint functionalities. I like this book also because it clearly pointed out which SharePoint edition (Foundation, Standard or Enterprise) each feature was available in. It not only saved me time, but also a lot of frustration if something was not available in my environment. I don't find this valuable information in other user guides.

Moreover, the author also spent a good chapter listing and explaining all the new features and key improvements in comparison to SharePoint 2010 and listed separately on which edition they were available in. It helped me justify ROI on upgrade very easily. I have recommended it to many of my colleagues and received great feedbacks from them as well. This book is great for both new SharePoint users as well as seasoned power users. Definitely a must have.

Excellent 2013 user guide, very comprehensive and concise

This is a great reference guide that I've found invaluable as a new SharePoint user. It provides a clear, concise step-by-step approach on how to configure sites for document management purposes and is the best 2013 guide book I've seen on the market. You can read the chapters in any order and it gets to the point of what you need to know quickly. It's well organized and covers all the topics and tools needed for building out a successful SharePoint 2013 platform. I highly recommend it.

Reference only, no strategy included

This is strictly a reference book. I'm not sure it offers much more than you can find with online references, though I find the microsoft sharepoint reference pages to be pretty unusable, so this is a step up.

What this book does not do is give you strategies on site architecture, governance, taxonomy, etc. It is purely reference. I needed something more.

John Lambshead is a retired senior scientific civil servant who has worked for the British Museum of Natural History, Southampton University, the University of California, and the Royal Society, with more than a hundred scientific articles to his name. He is also an experienced author and game designer, having written for Baen Books, Games Workshop, and Warlord Games, among others.

Classical naval warfare, for wargamers

This is essentially a book for wargamers, from a collection (Osprey Wargames), which has exactly this purpose.

Others, however, might also find it useful as a rather good introduction and overview. This is because it makes most of the main points about naval warfare under oars in the Mediterranean in Ancient times, up to the battle of Actium included, including all the logistical limitations inherent to gallery warfare.

Another advantage, of course, is that it pulls together and summarise materials found in numerous more specialised titles, some of which are listed in the rather short bibliography. It also explains the main features of such warfare in short, concise terms and spares the reader the technical jargon and explanations, while still making the main points that need to be made.

A number of the battle and campaign scenarios, whether historical or supposedly “freestyle” (although these also have similarities with a number of historical events) are rather interesting, particularly those about assaulting or defending harbours, which may be among the less well known.

Note that the scenarios are rather simple ones that are both easy to set up and which can be played in about half a dozen rounds or so. I got the impression that the booklet was somewhat targeted towards beginners or at least towards readers which may be trying out their first naval war game. To be fair, there is however nothing stopping you from making the games more complex and include bigger fleets, once you have the basic materials and scenarios.

I did nevertheless have a few surprises, and perhaps a few reservations.

I was for instance a bit disappointed to find out that ALL of the colour plates are essentially lifted from a range of other Osprey titles on classical naval warfare.

I was also surprised by the author’s statement believing that “Carthage failed to produce any exceptional admirals” and that this “was one of the great mysteries”, without any further attempt to explain this. I am not at all sure that this is correct, by the way, and there are at least a couple of names that come to mind and who were responsible for utterly defeating a Roman fleet at Drepana thanks to their much superior seamanship.

I was also a bit surprised about the author’s choices of exceptional admirals (all Greeks by the way). Instead of Themistocle, Alcibiades and Demetrios, neither of which were essentially admirals nor exceptional in this respect although they did win at least one naval battle each, one could have expected the Athenians Cimon and Conon, in particular.

One last point, regarding the scenario for the battle of Myonessus in 190 BC, has to do with the set-up of the scenario. This battle opposed a Seleucid fleet to an allied Romano-Rhodian one. The Seleucid fleet only includes 3 squadrons of triremes and two polyremes (a six and a seven) while the Rhodians has a squadron of fours and the Romans have five squadrons of fives. There seems to be a glitch in the scenario or a typo perhaps since, historically, the Seleucid had about ninety ships, half were larger than triremes and only five were sixes or sevens.

A Good Set of Convention-Friendly Rules

've always been intrigued by ancient naval warfare ever since I first saw the 1959 film "Ben-Hur." The naval battle is still my favorite part of the movie, despite the historical inaccuracies. I'm such a fan of this version, I'm not sure what to think about the upcoming remake.
If I do see the new "Ben-Hur," I'll write up a movie review. In the meantime, I'll get back on course with this rulebook review...
About 30 years ago, I picked up a used copy of "Trireme" at a game store in North Carolina and managed to play it a few times. Fast forward about 15 years, when my friend Joe gave me a copy of "War Galley" for Christmas. I played this a couple of times too, and in fact, like the rules better than "Trireme." Not to mention the counters are a lot nicer and more detailed.
I still have both boardgames, but I've always wanted to play an ancient naval game using miniatures. As fate would have it, my friend Dean told me during a visit that he has the rules "Poseidon's Warriors" along with some miniature ships, and wondered if I'd be interested in playing. I told him, "of course," and ordered the rules within a week.
"Poseidon's Warriors" is a 64-page wargame rule booklet covering naval warfare from 480 to 30 B.C. After a 5-page intro, the rules themselves only take up 14 pages (10-24). The rest of the booklet consists of historical scenarios, scenario and campaign set-ups.

The good points about "Poseidon's Warriors" are:

1. The rules are short and easy, even easier than "Trireme" and "War Galley." This makes the game great for beginners, and gamemasters running a session at a game convention.
2. The book is nicely illustrated with artwork depicting the actual battles and pictures of ship miniatures.
3. It's a bargain, ranging in price from just under $14 to about $20.

But on the other tip of the trident:

1. Some may consider the rules too basic. For instance, merchant ships, which relied solely on wind power can move in any direction the owning player wishes. The author did not want to include complex sailing rules, especially for ships he viewed as mere targets.
2. While there is a front & back page Quick Reference Sheet there are other charts scattered throughout the book that may take some time to find.
3. And speaking of the charts themselves, the font size is about half that of the regular text, which I find almost impossible to read without my higher-powered, bifocal reading glasses.

One note about all three games: More often that not, ancient naval battles involved hundreds of ships. So each game often scales its battles from a 3:1 to 15:1 ratio.

In general, Osprey Publishing seems to be hitting the right note by cranking out easy, inexpensive rules that are enjoyed by gamers and gamemasters alike. During this year's Enfilade! convention, several games of "Dragon Rampant," "Lion Rampant," "Frostgrave" and "In Her Majesty's Name" were played.
I'm sure "Poseidon's Warriors" will soon be fought-out at one of our region's future conventions, or game days.
